About Te Ahu Charitable Trust The Far North Regional Museum and the library had for some years identified the need to expand their buildings. This need resulted in a plan for Council, through its Long Term Community Plan, to look at rationalising all Council buildings in Kaitaia to match community expectations. The demonstrated need for a multifunctional facility to provide modern, purpose-built spaces for Kaitaia’s library, museum, i-SITE and service centre – especially the arts and culture - arose out of the LTCCP, with the recent addition to integrate the Far North Community Centre and Little Theatre. It is acknowledged that to succeed in the venture to construct a multifunctional community facility, it is vital that the project be driven by the community. The Te Ahu Charitable Trust Inc., a Council Controlled Organisation (CCO), was officially formed after nominations were called from the Far North community. The current trustees are:

In addition to the Trustees, who are all donating their time, expertise, experience and commitment to the project, there are a number of people who are assisting the trustees to ensure a successful outcome to this project. They are: Haami Piripi : Chair, Te Runanga o Te Rarawa Key stakeholders include Te Rarawa, Ngati Kahu, other iwi, Dalmatians and the other cultures who have chosen the “real” Far North as their home., the users of the Far North community centre, the arts community, Kataia Dramatic Society, Kaitaia A & P, Far North Community Forest Trust, NorthTec, Kaitaia Business Association and Department of Conservation. There are others and more will emerge as the project grows. The multifunctional nature of the community facility in effect means that Northlanders as a whole, along with visitors to the region, are also stakeholders. For example, the library is part of a district library service comprising six public libraries, five community and five area school/community libraries. The museum has a close relationship with other museum and archive organisations throughout northland. The i-SITE is one of three strategically located i-SITE visitor travel centres in the Far North and the council’s Kaitaia service centre is one of six offices located throughout the Far North. The Trustees meet on a regular basis in the boardroom of the FNDC Service Centre in Kaitaia at 10.00am.
